From Diana Smith of Test Prep and Tutoring:

Hi. I am sharing this great article I found on ways to modifiy your classroom to accomodate the needs of English as a Second Language stiudent [ESL]. As an experienced ESL and English teacher for over 15 years, I use many of these techniques–such as gamelogy, critical thinking, making lessons FUN!!, technology, etc. I also studied and used differentiated instruction–in an all inclusive ESL class as well as mixed English/ESL classes, and I was also very good at interjecting varied modalities to address the learning styles of students-building on existing strengths while also trying to develop skills in areas of weakness. If you follow the links from this article, you will see the individual background on some of these techniques. If you have any answers, please post on the blog so others can benefit, but also feel free to contact me–or any of the teachers here on Test Prep and Tutoring, as they are experts in their areas as well! We hope you’ll take a minute to comment and provide feedback for our readers. Thank you. Enjoy!! Diana

Free ESL English Lessons | Lesson Two-Confusing Words

Lend and Borrow-Confusing Words!

The Lesson Plan, Confusing Words-Lend and Borrow, is the second in a series of free ESL lessons I am posting here on Test Prep and Tutoring as well as on Test Prep and Tutoring’s  Facebook Page.  It’s also posted on Google Plus in the hopes of receiving feedback on how to make the lessons better for my students. The first lesson was on English idioms called Idioms: Black Sheep of the Family.black-sheep-of-the-family

I teach English to ESL students to adult professionals in

China. I try and incorporate any suggestions my students have to improve my lessons. I want to provide the best ESL lessons! I am considering making at least some of my Free ESL English lessons more interactive. I am testing a couple of different screen video apps that will allow me to talk through each slide to provide more explanations and examples.  I provide private ESL lessons with complete lesson plans, but these are meant for students who aren’t ready for that commitment and want good, quality ESL English Lessons Free.

This is a grammar-focused lesson appropriate for an ESL students at around Level 4.

There are English language level descriptions for each language level on Test Prep and Tutoring. Here’s the simplified Chinese translated edition. If English or Chinese is not your native language, there is a Google Translator on the post. I apologize if the translation isn’t the best. Google should hear about it!

I ask only that you leave a comment even it’s just a thank you or a “Hello, I was here” comment. I hope you take a minute though to provide some real feedback so I can better help teach ESL English language students. I would also love it if you would share this post, the website and subscribe and/or like this website or our Facebook site,  pin us or share a Tweet. We need a following to keep the work up.

Don’t forget to check out the first free ESL language lesson offered here, Idioms: Black Sheep of the Family. Fun!

Thank you.

ESL Student Ratings and Feedback

Ratings and ComplimentsTutor ABC

Diana Smith
11/01/16-12/10/16

Here are some of my current ratings and comments from Tutor ABC, where I  teach English as a Second Language [ESL] to  mostly adult students in China.  Keep in mind, almost 50% of Tutor ABC’s students do not leave ratings or feedback at all and often if they do, it is to rate them poorly due to IT [tech] problems, which teachers have no control over. As of today, my overall average rating out of 10 is 9.5, so I consider myself very blessed. I didn’t list all the ratings, just ones that also left comments.

Free English Lessons for ESL Students

I have taught English as a Second Language for over 15 years.

I love teaching international students regardless of level. I have also worked for other online teaching sites [besides Test Prep and Tutoring] as well as teaching as a substitute teacher and acting as an educational consultant. In those capacities, I have been able to keep current on important educational issues and climatic changes.

One thing that never changes–students [people] appreciate honest, upfront people who walk their talk. I try to be that kind of person. I care. I want  my students to succeed. Over the years I have provided many, many free services and products. I can’t help it; I am compelled. By I know as a Level 2 Reiki Practitioner and a Certified Yoga Instructor, that giving it away devalues it not only to me, but especially to the students I give it to. So, in the last few years [5+], I have worked for an income for other online companies. Although I have strong opinions on many international companies I work for-those from Korea, China and Taiwan as well as Russia-I will not vent here. I WILL, however, say that many of these companies are so money oriented they lose sight of what is important. Employees-especially good employees-are invaluable and are your lifeline to success. Yes. Paying customers bring in immediate income. Satisfied customers ARE important, but to have happy customers, you must have happy and successful teachers. That means you care about them, and you do not screw them over–which many companies try to do.

Anyways, I am creating presentation type lessons where  I first create a lesson –30+ minutes-focused on interest, focused on the elements that make up the English modes of communication [grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, speaking, listening, etc.], and English level.  I’m finding students love them, especially when I teach them as I presenter. Here, however, on Test Prep and Tutoring, I offer them free of charge for English as a Second Language students to use. PLEASE do share what you thought of the lessons, like and/or share on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and here, provide feedback and suggestions. Thanks!

I posted a similar type chart based on Blooms Taxonomy Revised pyramid of critical thinking skills. Websites and online resource were listed for each level or thinking skill. There are sites using Bloom for entire curriculum.  There’s also a few good sites where I’ve found lessons and sections of curriculum using gamology as core teaching tool. As you can imagine, as all are a bit outside the box, they meet standards including common core. Great results too. Have you been to Lumosity.com yet? Brain training where gamology rules, and short term memory, processing speed, focus and concentration show (progress tracked for each session) will show substantial improvement.
