Helping Kids Become Good Readers!
Did you know that learning to read is a challenge for almost 40 percent of kids?
Unfortunately, the older a child is, the more difficult it is to teach him or her to read. If a child can’t read well by the end of third grade, odds are that he or she will never catch up. And the effects of falling behind and feeling like a failure can be devastating. Kids often lose a chunk of the school year’s learning over the summer. It’s important they continue to build and practice their skill sets, especially in reading. This is usually my most asked for summer classes. I am offering signups now. Private, 1-1, and small group.

“I know Diana as a professional services provider, as well as an activist for social justice. She brings a big heart, high integrity and passion to any project she takes on and is a joy to work with. Diana is also versatile, someone with a wide range of interests and skills which allow her to dabble in seemingly unrelated work and/or causes: they are all connected however, to her commitment to teaching, mentoring and helping people and small businesses so that they learn how to continually to improve and expand their opportunities. I would recommend Diana highly as a friend, consultant or community organizer.”

That’s why I started working on reading intervention about six years ago. I was getting calls/referrals for reading support for children—a couple not even in kindergarten yet! Can you imagine? I’d worked with high school students with dyslexia, and I knew the sadness and frustrating reality of not catching these gaps until it was almost too late. I was an Academic Case Manager at the Landmark School in Pride’s Crossing, MA. The high school specializes in teaching students with language-based learning disabilities, namely, dyslexia how to read. Wonderful school. Great success…considering. But it’s a tough road.
My heart when out to these little ones and their parents too. I already knew a lot, but I created a really cool program using the latest recommendations, and it’s work really well in combination with organization and critical thinking. It all builds confidence. Don’t let your little ones fall into the “Summer Slump.” Even if you choose to go elsewhere for coursework, please come back as I’ll be posting lots of targeted materials and suggestions for parents to provide to their children so they don’t lose what they worked so hard to attain. I have a LOT of materials and resources, and I’d love to share any information I have, so please do not hesitate to ask.
I will be holding 1-on-1 private reading intervention/support tutorials, M-F, days/hours to be determined. The classes will last approximately 60 minutes. The cost for private 1-1 is $55 per hour/class. I am also offering small group classes, with students entering the same grade in Sept. These classes will run for approximately 90 minutes. The cost per class is $60.00. If your child has a couple of friends who want to get reading support—build skills, practice learned skills, and most importantly, do not want to fall behind in reading at grade level, and they sign up, I will discount your child’s charges by $5.00 for each student that signs up. I will also discount multiple days by $5.00 per class. If the classes were full, I would offer additional discounts. These are lower prices than usual, but I am new to tutoring here in CT, so I thought I’d see how it went, Classes sync with the CT Core Standards and are grade-level appropriate materials
SIGN UP NOW I‘ll need to know any special concerns or areas of weakness you’d like me to focus on, and if they have an Individualized Education Program [IEP], anything from that I need to know would be helpful. His/her reading level, either a Lexile score or Leveled Reader number would be great! Please contact me with any questions. Please feel free to visit my LinkedIn Profile.
Warmly,
Diana Smith, MS, Ed
